Paintings in encaustic… beeswax, tree resin and pigment.
It's an ancient medium, originating in the eastern Mediterranean and used by Greeks and Greco-Egyptians for painting statuary, funery portraits and icons. Some of the funery portraits have endured to the present. Painted in a melted state, it hardens to a shell-like finish. Virtually out of use for nearly 2000 years, it re-emerged in the mid-20th Century, as electricity made working
with a melted medium practical. The work you will see is luminous, layered, sometimes ephemeral- and very, very sturdy, an ever growing joy and challenge.
